Industrial design, not just for factories

The popularity of industrial designs has grown over the past few years. An estimated $500 billion was spent in 2013 on alterations and additions to homes according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Industrial style homes are one trend that is taking the world by storm. To be able to pull off the industrial style look, we take a look at what industrial style is and where it comes from, and give you some ideas for different parts of the home.

What is industrial style?

To quote interiordesignipedia.com : “this concept is based largely upon the space being honest with its components i.e. everything from the construction to the selected furniture and items are boldly on display. That's why an open space like a loft is good for this confident style”

Industrial interior style takes design cues from industrial and functional minimalist spaces. It uses flat surfaces and a raw unfinished look with the sharp lines and textures of old industrial styled objects made of steel or wood, to create interesting spaces that are clean with warm neutral tones.

Where did it come from? The evolution

Industrial interior design styles have evolved from minimalist designs, which, like modern lifestyle movements, seek to de-clutter a hectic modern life. This trend of the 'less is more' approach combines with renovation ideals that incorporate and celebrate the heritage of old warehouses and factories that have been converted into living spaces.

Industrial style kitchens

Industrial chic in the kitchen can be achieved by displaying a few choice appliances made of stainless steel, using an industrial desk as a bench top or getting a complete remodel by a professional carpenter to give your kitchen the appearance of a commercial kitchen.

Industrial style bathrooms

Installing industrial style lighting is a start to the right look in the bathroom. Or even get a licensed plumber to completely renovate the bathroom; they could remove the vanity and install an industrial styled sink or even expose some of the pipe work. You could also have the floor tiles removed and polish the concrete floor.

Industrial style bedrooms

Industrial vintage furniture can be re-purposed in the bedroom. Try using steel shelving as a book case or converting industrial furniture into bedroom furniture. Or if you have brick walls, try exposing the brick for a factory wall look.

Industrial styled homes may be minimalist in approach, but careful planning and design considerations are needed to pull off an industrial style look that gets everybody talking.
